Watching the Polish Hammer shit talk KG last night and follow it up with results hurts my soul. Remember when KG used to go in the paint and had an arsenal of moves beyond the jump shot? Me and KASSO decided to take advantage of the bareable temps and rock a lil' sumtin for the community. It's an abandoned lot where a building was demolished and now is like a giant toilet for the local animals, the last part we didn't know until we got on location. Here's a peek at what lay every every few inches at various stages of detioration (your welcome for sharing)

I brought an empty squeeze bottle of dish detergent and mixed acrylic and water and had fun squirting colors and slanging paint combining with layers of tags and scrawl for the background. In the end I like what came of it, tho as always feel it could've been batter. Hard to concentrate standing in shit, among other complications of the day that thankfully turned out alright.

Thoughts on Tim Tebow ... A customer came in yesterday, who I've known for a number of years. She's from MA originally and I remember from the 2008 election, she's a Republican and a Christian, she backed Romney over McCain, but said the only thing she didn't like was his Mormonism. All this led to the following conversation around the game coming in a few hours.
"you think your Pats are going to be okay this weekend?" I asked. She smiles, clearly impressed I remember where she's from and that the whole family is into the Patriots (she stopped coming in three or four times a day in the 08 recession), "I hope so." "Better watch out, he's got God on his side," I lay down with a good amount of sarcasm she fails to pick up on. "You know, I don't root for anyone else, but if we had to lose to someone, I'd be glad it was him." and I know why, and it's not enough to say he's Christian, he's her kind of Christian. When Obama was running, she wasn't on his side, he is a Christian. Matter of fact she'd push her negative opinions of him onto me unprovoked. She liked the Mormon remember? Tebow, from what I understand, is one of those "family values" conservative christians who omit the whole Jesus ate with Roman tax collectors, good samaritan thing and prefer to scapegoat those in vulnerable numbers and different cultures and focus on gods wrath instead of gods love. Btw, eye of the needle guys. Every time he wins a miraculous win, he adds fuel to the fire of the Brimstone believers. I see this I want to be the adversary to big Tim. I want to draw a line in the sand and say their faith and my faith are not the same. But a few days ago I read an article written clearly against Tebow and felt the polar opposite. I hear a lot of people hating on him because of his beliefs. I have to admit, being a person who writes LUV in an aggressive personality arena, the amount of courage and conviction to be in such a bad boy sport and play the choir boy is very admirable. And I think of a verse from a Common song on religion that I hold dear "long as you know there's a being that's supreme to you, you let that show towards others and the things you do." There was a roundtable on ESPN before the Bulls vs Celtics game yesterday about sports and Martin Luther King where a woman said the most segregated hour in our country is every Sunday when we all go to our different houses of worship, she said the most united is Super Bowl Sunday. Well I'm not so sure this year lol. But honestly, when I heard the guy talk for himself, like after beating another customer of my store's team, except literally (Mark Sanchez), Tebow seemed to praise his teammates just as much as big upping GOD. Watching him interact with them he didn't seem to be pushing any anti-abortion, anti-immigration anti-gay anti-everything except corporate money and the word, just the word, not thee "word", Jesus on anyone. Listen, I'm going to take the stance that the guy just believes and I'm not going to fault him for that. I'm going to stand under the same doing right for goodness's sake umbrella and hope he can pull off another miracle. Because the man plays without fear and all heart and it's fun to watch, besides my Bears have long been out. I hope his hail mary's land in perfect view for all his haters to see! Sick of seeing Tom Brady win anyways. Go Tebow !

I was recently interviewed for BaseNine Magazine, here's the piece...

1. What got you motivated to become an artist?

LUV1-I was born that way I guess. Only thing I ever wanted to do. In Kindergarten they’d ask what you want to be…then again years past…only answer I ever had “artist”.

2. Who are your inspirations in the discipline you do, and how have they influence your work?

LUV1-I draw inspiration from everything, rust, steam, erosion, and the color of sound, the texture of emotion, in art…the monks of Iona, tribal art, abstract expressionists, street art and graffiti from all over the world.

3. How long have you been creating, can you share some of your experiences?

LUV1-All my life. My art has been shown in Jersey City Hall, in Quad Studios in Times Square, Coyote Building in Chicago, and Guerrilla Gallery at Newark’s Penn Station among many other places. I’ve painted on walls in Yonkers, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Philadelphia, Chester (PA), Chicago, Washington DC, and all around Central NJ, but most quantitatively Trenton, and I can’t wait to add to that list. My work has been featured in the Utrecht Supply Catalog, on Liquitex Brushes’ YouTube Channel, many online sites, several NJ newspapers, but the coolest was in Dr. Cornel West’s Memoir “Brother West.”

4.Name the tools of your trade, do you prefer traditional mediums or digital mediums?

LUV1-Aerosol, acrylic and ink

5. Did you have any formal training in a vocational or techinical school? If so which schools did you attend and how was the experience?

LUV1-I went to SVA in NYC. It was cool.

6. Do you feel schools and learning institutions that specialize in art training are essential for an artist to develop their talents or can one do it by learning on their own?

LUV1-Essential? No, by no means. Worth their cost? Nope. Actually they can be formatively destructive at times to an original thinker because they’re filled with formulaic approaches handed down for centuries and “right way/wrong way” ideologies’. But if you get a good teacher or two and really pay attention, you can learn a few things to help you along the way.

7. Where were you born and did your upbringing have a strong influence towards your creative development?

LUV1-Outside Philly, but was moved around a lot because my dad was a pastor. I’d say that aspect of my upbringing caused me to be broad thinking. Having different geographical experiences of different social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds made me a student of culture. I know a bit about a lotta kinds of people. It probably makes me a bridge builder. I am always trying to bring opposing elements together. Even with my art…I don’t really call myself a graffiti artist, because it’s not all about my name, also I started as more of a character artist within that box, until I got out and focused on bringing more abstract expression and trying to go somewhere new with it. I don’t really think it’s necessarily street art as we know it, in the sense, I’m rocking yards, jams, walls, ect with cans. I like to see it as a gray area between both. I’m like that with a lot in my life.

8. If you don’t mind us asking what projects are you currently working on and is it available to the public?

LUV1- I am currently working on a show for the spring of Recycled Advertisement Art which you can see on my flickr or get updates on at my blog http://eluvee.blogspot.com . This project that I refer to is my Recycled Advert Art series, consists of art on signs we were throwing away at my job because the next retail set went up. Yes I work sorta retail, I make coffee, I'll let you guess...Reason I started it is to save money on canvas and have thinner easier to store pieces that could still be very large and yet not burdensome b/c they lay flat. It's also that I feel myself eager to use them, I live around them, and they have symbols that are ingrained in me because of all the time I've spent around them. They also represent society to me. As the people I encounter by a huge majority present themselves as a result of these images and the culture it represents. I think it's something I want to reclaim and be heard in, not a take over or separation, but a Buddhist like acceptance and flow, like using their aggressioninto a counter move in water style kung fu. At first I wanted to cover the surface of the ads and rid them from my memory, make "me" all that matters. But, what I feel at this stage in my life is a deep pull toward at oneness. And although this Americanized commercialized commoditized genericness I am surrounded by has always been my skeptically paternal ever present bad ruler thru putty brains of warm cozy conformity in the sentiment and motives of even my own and always under the guard of "safety" is an acknowledged problem I have with the world, it is just that, everything that raised me, something I feel sentimentally proud of even such, there's good there too sometimes, it's just misled. So the pieces are to be my coercion, my Utopian edits, and places of common ground with the subtle monsters of our commutes. Complete with organic local handmade fingerprints!

9.What advice would you give to aspiring artist wanting to brave the world of and independent artist ?

LUV1- Stay positive

10. What projects have you done that you are most proud of?

LUV1-Actually nothing glamorous at all. Me and KASSO painted two daycares in Trenton. Meeting all the little kids, their families, the teachers, and then having 'em all out there watching us was such a great blessing. At the second one I even had the kids helping, spraying stencils. I'm not a teacher, I don't want to be. What made me proud of the moment was our art work, labeled "graffiti" that we had been doing illegally all over the city was loved by the community and being used at a place where kids can see and it has the power to really change some minds about art and where it should be, how it should be done, and who should do it. You know? Affecting the world around me, it's powerful. (S/O to Andrea and Kids R First!)

11.What is your opinion of the state of art in todays world of technology driven special effects do you feel that artist still recieve respect for his or her works?

LUV1-man, I dunno bout that one...take printed word for example (which feeds Illustrators and photographers as well) is it better online? Not for producers, or their communities, but easier access is better for the consumer, more convenient anyways. Which potentially could lead to more awareness, and also truer freedom of press and not pay for play. Or music for that matter…was it better in the days of vinyl? For the culture, as far as overall experience, yeah I think so, better sounds, better returns, communal places to share and explore with other like minds. As for accessibility though, affordability, that may be different. Art isn’t just a product like eggs and milk; it’s a part of the human experience like a smile. Like libraries, you can’t keep it locked up in profits, people have the right, or at least are better people with access. I’m going to feed my soul by any means. There again, the question is…better access to everything vs. better wealth distribution, though not necessarily more fairness.

12. Do you feel that art is dying in the sense that very few artist still create by hand in the mass market of popular culture?

LUV1-Not at all, I feel the human touch is irreplaceable and necessary for the spirit’s health.

Recently, 12/1, matter of fact, my work was included in an exhibition by the National Museum of Hip Hop honoring graffiti at Quad Studios in Times Square. Thing is...sometimes the spontinaeity of the moment flows without intended purpose, to me, these are my favorite pieces. This piece was like that. I actually had a preconcieved direction I was going to go in, using calculated bits of the ad. Maybe it was the mood I was in when I started it, I abandoned form and formula almost immediately. The weather was beautiful when I started, I was just in a good mood, living life and savoring it. I threw out limits and let loose. Think I put some scotch in my coffee that morning...the rest is just good music in my ears and slanging paint.

the face is a young native american boy I drew many years ago and have used in the past as stickers and wheatpastes, it actually was the first portrait I did in spray. the drawing was done during my kids stay in the hospital, being my son is part black foot, it had personal meaning beyond an affinty for native culture and people. the expression took on a channeling for my frustration with my lack of power in the situation and it's bleekness, yet hope evident in the slight curl of smirkyness on the edges of the mouth. that hope the determination of the human spirit to proliferate and thrive even in the most uphill beatdown positions.

in short, this piece is a bridging of past with present in many different ways to me. 8"x10"

One thing I find concerning once an artist finds success is the pressure to follow a certain look consistently is so strong it seems artists use formulas and xerox out copy after copy. I always wrestle with keeping my style consistent but fresh. With the advert pieces I find it interesting and challenging to match a bit of the design I'm working with. So every piece requires a different hand. With this one it's definately a Bauhaus 30s 40s euro thing...burning time

My recent interactions with Sage Francis reminded me of this post I've been wanting to do for awhile where I put up others with like names. Writing a name like love, obviously there are a lot of other people with similar names. Yes, I agree, I do not win any points for originality. Makes it even more obnoxious that I put a one behind it like I'm the one and only because I spell it like the non romantic LUV, the one is more about the oneness of said LUV being expressed, nahmean? Like Bob Marley jo. Thing about love is, tho, I am not in competition with others for the name. I just look at it as we are all trying to spread love. Same team, family, cuzzo type thing. So when I come across another positive soul, I've always made a mental note to one day shout 'em out. Today's day one....

It's autumn, it's brisk, windy, chilly. It's dark and it's not even dinner time. Warmth and comfort, the heat of the steam, creamy hot cocoa going down to your stomache, spreading heat all around your chest to your finger tips. Giving you power restored, no longer so vulnerable to the rugged concrete, no longer a chattering statue, now fresh and agile. These paintings are biographical visual memories, a collection of textures and rhythm I feel of my past as I paint them. I sit at kitchen tables, I walk down dim lit streets.

What is an Aerosol Art Battle?

A theme is given the day of the event. Then artists are given an equal amount of time to complete their art on space provided. Example, canvas, Crescent Graffiti Paper, wood. They will all be using Montana spray paint and paint markers. A qualified panel of judges base the art on different criteria, lettering, concept, color, composition, originality and technique.

THE BLACK BOOK BATTLE! OPEN TO EVERYONE!

Register at Noon or anytime before event at Colorest during business hours.

Crescent will provide all on-time attendees with Black Book. Colorest will be providing some art materials, although contestants are urged to bring materials such as: colored pencils, markers, paint markers etc. to compete in battle. Sharing could take away valuable time! Registration is limited!

Rules:

Registrants will be given a topic to use for inspiration, they will be allowed 60 minutes to complete this piece. Then Judges will pick winner based on same criteria for Aerosol Event. What is a Black Book Battle?

Similar to the aerosol event but, instead of painting on large surfaces you draw, paint and design all on paper. Black books are a place for artists to put down ideas, Crescent® Graffiti Paper™ is designed specifically for spray paints, acrylics and won’t dry out markers. Great place for artists to sketch or experiment anywhere inspiration strikes.

two things happened on this one...

I had the pleasure of painting over football field length of walls with my fellow SAGEs on 10/8-10/9 at the Highland Design Farm. The assignment was to continue from the theme of last year's Highland Sentinal but to have the murals somewhat match the artisans inside. So, jewels and wires, earth and birds for the naturalist and jeweler. Da Vinci and designs for the classical artist, whose building is yet to be completed. And a welder facing the Highland Design shop where Sean Mannix's creations come to life.

S.A.G.E. Collective was in the house at The Center for Contemporary Art's Anti Gala on 9/24/2011 doing live mural painting and bodypainting with Leon Rainbow and hula hooping by Andrea Gianchiglia. Kasso and myself had a great time painting at the lovely home of Andrea Yitkin. We painted an old barn surounded by Andrea's sculptures, statues, flowers, newly refurbished by her husband Tom. Right next to a goat, rooster and some chicken we were a long way from the usual urban elements. The theme of the wall was a Garden of Eden scene, it all came together seamlessly. Here's a video featuring the many sights of the weekend.

Had to leave it incomplete. The Graf element at the bboy BBQ in Philly got shut down due to a local congresswomans dislike for art from a can. Apparently her political voice matters more the the community itself which was out supporting what we were doing. This is sad, two blocks of artists not being paid just out there for the culture and trying to give the city some art and style
